For me, a truly great hotel is one that makes the rest of the trip feel easier. The location works. The service is intuitive. The room gives you somewhere you actually want to return to after a long day. And ideally, the hotel itself becomes part of the reason you remember the destination so fondly.
That’s especially important when you’re traveling through Europe or Asia, where the right hotel can completely change the rhythm of a trip.

There are plenty of beautiful hotels around Lake Como, but Grand Hotel Tremezzo has the kind of setting that makes you want to slow your entire itinerary down.

Tokyo is enormous, and choosing the wrong neighborhood can make a trip feel far more complicated than it needs to be.
The Peninsula Tokyo’s location in Marunouchi, near Ginza and the Imperial Palace, makes it a particularly useful base for travelers who want easy access to some of the city’s major attractions while still having a refined place to retreat.
The hotel itself has the polished service and spacious accommodations you’d expect from the brand, but what I particularly like about properties like this is the sense of consistency they provide in a city that can otherwise feel overwhelming.
After a long day navigating Tokyo, it’s nice to know exactly what you’re coming back to.

Bangkok: Capella Bangkok
Bangkok is energetic, colorful, and endlessly interesting. It’s also a place where having a peaceful hotel can completely change the experience.
Capella Bangkok sits along the Chao Phraya River and offers a much more residential, tranquil atmosphere than you might expect from a city of this size.
The riverfront setting is beautiful, but the real appeal is the balance. You can spend the day exploring temples, markets, neighborhoods, and restaurants, then return somewhere that feels quiet and removed from the city’s energy.
For travelers who want luxury without the formality that can sometimes come with it, this is a property I’d put on the shortlist.

Bali: Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan
Bali is one of those destinations where the hotel can genuinely become part of the reason you’re going.
At Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, the setting in the jungle outside Ubud creates a very different experience from staying in the center of town. The surrounding landscape encourages a slower pace, while the resort offers plenty of ways to spend your time without needing to organize another excursion every few hours.
This is the kind of stay I’d consider when a client tells me they want Bali to feel restorative rather than packed with activities.
And that’s an important distinction.
A wellness-focused trip doesn’t need a schedule full of wellness activities. Sometimes the best thing you can give someone is a beautiful place where they don’t have to do anything.

What I Look For in a Luxury Hotel
I don’t choose hotels simply because they’re five-star.
In fact, the most expensive property isn’t automatically the best choice for a particular trip.
When I’m researching a hotel for a client, I’m looking at the bigger picture. Where is it located? How does that location work with the itinerary? What does the surrounding neighborhood feel like? Is the service consistently strong? Are the rooms actually comfortable? Does the property have character? Will the traveler enjoy spending time there?
I’m also thinking about what happens when you leave the hotel.
A gorgeous property that requires a 45-minute transfer every time you want to have dinner may not be the best choice for someone who wants to explore independently. On the other hand, a secluded resort can be exactly right for someone whose priority is privacy and relaxation.
The “best hotel” doesn’t exist in isolation.
There’s only the best hotel for this traveler, on this trip.
Luxury Is Also About What You Don’t Have to Think About
This is probably the biggest reason I love carefully chosen hotels. When the hotel is right, you don’t have to spend your vacation compensating for it.
- You aren’t frustrated by the location.
- You’re not wishing you’d booked somewhere with a better room.
- You’re not spending an hour figuring out how to get back after dinner.
- You’re not looking at photos of another hotel and wondering if you made the wrong choice.
Instead, the hotel quietly supports the trip.
You wake up somewhere beautiful. You can walk to breakfast. Your day begins without unnecessary logistics. You come back in the afternoon and actually enjoy being there. And when it’s time to leave, the transition is simple.
That is what I mean when I talk about travel feeling effortless.
It’s not that every detail is luxurious.
It’s that the right details have been considered before you ever arrive.
The Hotel Is Part of the Itinerary
When I plan a trip for a client, I don’t think of the hotel as a separate booking. It’s part of the experience.
A hotel can help determine how much you can comfortably see in a day, how much downtime you have, how easily you can get around, and even whether you enjoy the destination as much as you expected to. That’s why I spend so much time researching properties and matching them to the person traveling.
Because a hotel that looks perfect on a booking site isn’t necessarily the hotel I’d recommend. And sometimes the property I’d choose isn’t the one that would have appeared first in your search results.
